January Athlete Spotlight Of The Month! Stephanie Beck

Axon’s Athlete Spotlight of the month of September goes to Stephanie Beck!

1: Where are you from originally?

    Lexington, NC

    2. What is your favorite WOD/Movement?

    Power Clean

    3. What were you doing before CrossFit? How did you hear about CrossFit and/CrossFit Axon?

I had been going to a local gym’s boot camp for about a year. When that coach left the gym, I began working out on my own. I heard about CrossFit from a coworker. She invited me to an open workout at her gym so I could see what a CrossFit workout looked like.

I was a little hesitant but when I decided to join, I started looking for a gym that was close to home. That’s how I found CrossFit Axon!

    4. What other sports or activities do you participate in as a family besides CrossFit?

I have a little Pomimo (named Maverick) that loves to go for walks. We try to go out and walk or run around our neighborhood on the weekends or nice evenings. I also ran my first Spartan race last May and loved it so that is definitely something I plan to do again in the near future!

    5. How many times per week do you CrossFit?

My goal is three times a week. It doesn’t always happen but it’s a realistic goal for me at the moment!

    6. What is your athletic background?

I played Soccer and ran Track in High School. In College, I played Intramural Soccer and Flag Football.

    7. Give us some insight as to your thoughts after your first workout at CrossFit Axon.

I can’t remember the exact workout but I remember feeling really motivated when I left. I was tired but so excited to be starting something that would help me reach my fitness goals.

    8. What brought your back after your first workout?

The encouragement and support that I received not only from the coaches but from other members while there was a huge confidence booster and it helped me realize that CrossFit was something that I could actually do.

    9. Do you have any special or favorite CrossFit Axon memories/moments?

The day I got my first toes to bar! We were all working on our weaknesses and this was something that I had been wanting to do for a while. I’ve never had a lot of upper body strength so this movement was really difficult for me.

There were several people in the gym that were giving me pointers and it took a lot of attempts but I finally hit the bar! It was such a good feeling to accomplish something that I had been working so hard on.

    10. What would you like to tell someone who wants to start CrossFit Axon but may be unsure about getting started?

I say go for it! I think there are a lot of fears and “what ifs” that come into play when someone is just getting started. I questioned myself a lot in the beginning and worried that I wouldn’t be able to do parts of the workout because I wasn’t strong enough or didn’t have the stamina.

One thing that I have really enjoyed about Crossfit Axon is that they modify or scale the workouts to fit your individual needs. They really take the time to teach you the movements so that you can perform them safely and effectively even if you are a beginner.

    11. What is your eating style?

I try to eat healthy throughout the week although I don’t have a lot of will power when it comes to sweet tea and pizza. Breakfast is usually egg cups with spinach or boiled eggs. Lunch is leftovers from the night before. I like to keep my meals simple and quick because I don’t enjoy cooking.

I try to prep for the week on Sundays with chicken, ground turkey, and veggies and use that to make different meals throughout the week. Some of my go-to recipes are taco salad, grilled chicken with roasted sweet potatoes and veggies, and turkey meatballs with steamed broccoli.

    12. What kind of results have you seen since starting at CrossFit Axon?

Throughout this past year, I’ve noticed an improvement in my stamina and overall strength. I’m able to run for longer periods of time, add weights to the bar, and perform a higher number of reps. Even in my day to day routine, I’ve noticed an increase in energy and ability to do things around the house.

    13. What do you do for a living?

I own a business (Minted Expressions) that supports busy entrepreneurs and business owners. I work with clients to build and manage their online presence through Social Media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest as well as designing and developing their websites. I also help with email marketing campaigns, blog management, and online webinars and workshops.

    14. What drives you to be an active family?

I have several family members that I have watched struggle with health complications because of their lifestyle choices. I hope that maintaining an active lifestyle and monitoring the food I am eating will keep me from dealing with those same hardships. Also, being active is something that I now enjoy. I feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of every workout I complete.
